I understand, you want to read what was most popular.  What were the top choices of readers for the month of October 2013?  I’d be happy to share those with you.

Today will end the 30 (31) Day Ultimate Blog Challenge for this quarter.  As I prepared this blog site for launch the end of September 2013, I had no idea that it would be as popular as it got.  I am grateful to everyone who viewed, shared and followed it this month.  I will be continuing to create great new haunted posts but it will not be on a daily basis as it has been for the challenge.

I will be working on my books for the month of November but I will stop in and be sure to provide you with entertainment on both blogs.

I hope if you have enjoyed it that you will follow it as well as it’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/WhereTheGhostsLive to keep up with the new haunts.

185The Slater Mill is an old textile factory built in 1793 in Pawtucket, RI and was the first water powered cotton mill.  It is a historical landmark and museum which showcases the machines of the American Industrial Revolution.

If you were to visit this museum, you would find that it offers, exhibits, a research library, theater, gift shop, demonstrations, lectures and more.  This location can be rented out for an array of different types of events.

There is a great deal of energy in this mill and it doesn’t all come from the machinery and water wheel.  This mill is haunted.

Slater Mill employed entire families during the 1800’s.  It was not uncommon that a child of 6 or 7 might be found in employment.  These were different times.  One of the machines on display at this location was the cause of many dismemberments and deaths.  When the machine jammed, they would send the small children in to fix it because they were much smaller and could quickly and more effectively escape when it started to work suddenly.

There have been several sightings of black figures, children have been heard screaming in pain and many other instances of paranormal activity has been felt here.

Take a few minutes to watch the video below.  (You may want to use headphones if you are in public due to a child screaming.)

Most Terrifying Places in America – Slater Mill

This location offers ghost tours at all 3 of the mills on site.  Join the Johnson twins, Carl and Keith from New England Anomolies Research and Investigation Team as they guide you on a real paranormal investigation.  For times and dates, check out the website, http://www.slatermill.org/programs/ghosttours.

The Origins of Halloween

28 Monday Oct 2013

All Souls Day, Celts, Halloween, New England, Pope Boniface IV, Samhain, United States

hHave you ever thought of the origins of Halloween, where and why it all began as well and why we celebrate it in the United States the way we do?  I have compiled what I believe, to be some very fascinating facts about the evolution of how Halloween came to be what it is today.

(This will be my last off-topic post here for a while.  I prefer to focus on the history of true haunted locations and the experiences the living are having with the paranormal and the how and why of it all.)

The Earliest Origins

It began approximately 2,000 years ago, the ancient Celtic festival of “Samhain,” marked a new year for the area of what is now Ireland, the U.K. and Northern France.  The celebration marked the end of the summer season, the death of the harvesting period and beginning of winter.  It took place on November 1st.  This was also the time of year human death tolls increased.

The Celts believed that on October 31, ghosts of the deceased returned to earth to cause trouble and damage crops.  The belief of the time was that these spirits communicated with the priests during this time period and helped them better predict the future which gave them great comfort.

The Priests (called Druids), would mark the celebration by gathering with the Celts and burning crops and animals as an offering for the spirits.  They would adorn animal heads and skins during the celebration and attempt to contact these spirits and communicate the future of those around them.  They would continue the celebration in front of their own hearths by lighting them from the sacred bonfire.  Their belief was that it would help protect them during the long winter months.

How the Rule of the Roman Empire Changed This Celebration

The Celtic territory was conquered by the Roman Empire by 43 A.D. and during the 400 year rule, the Roman festivals of “Feralia,” the celebration of the passing of the dead and “Pomona,” the celebration of the Goddess of fruit and trees were combined with the Celtic celebration, which is most likely where bobbing for apples comes into play.

The Catholic Church Gets Involved

According to History.com, “On May 13, 609 A.D., Pope Boniface IV dedicated the Pantheon in Rome in honor of all Christian martyrs, and the Catholic feast of All Martyrs Day was established in the Western church. Pope Gregory III (731–741) later expanded the festival to include all saints as well as all martyrs, and moved the observance from May 13 to November 2.”  The church later dedicated November 1st as “All Souls Day,” also referred to as, ” All-hallows,” or “All-hallowmas,” in the year 1000.  Once it became a church holiday, people celebrated in similar ways as the Celts did but the costumes extended to include saints, angels and devils.

Halloween in America

Halloween was celebrated by the Pioneers in Maryland and areas south much more than the New England area due to Protestant beliefs.  As the beliefs of the Europeans came together with the Indians, the celebrations came to include gatherings where the attendees would celebrate the harvest by telling stories of the dead and each others’ fortunes and incorporated singing and dancing.

Halloween as we know it today came about nationally during the 1800’s with the influx of Irish Immigrants.  Irish and English traditions meshed together and people would dress up and go house to house asking for money or food.

By the beginning of the 20th century there was a movement to make it a national holiday centered more around neighborhood gatherings and away from celebrating pranks, witchcraft and ghosts.  Leaders and newspapers spread the word that they wanted all things scary removed from the holiday’s celebrations.

Between the 1920’s-1950’s the older practices of celebrating Halloween were embraced once again.  Families believed they could prevent tricks being played on them by passing out candy to the small children.

Spookyworld – Our Visit and Review

Freak Show, Haunted attractions, haunted theme park, Litchfield New Hampshire, New England, Spooky attractions, Spookyworld, Spookyworld Litchfield NH, Spookyworld Nightmare New England, United States

In my last post, Spookyworld Nightmare New England – Litchfield, NH, I give an overview of what the attractions are at this locationare and what you might expect to see and experience.

Today, I will give you an slight insight of our experiences during our last night’s visit.

487571_10151714894153456_1493144967_nWe arrived at the park at 6:30 and were the third group in line for our first attraction, The Bishop Legacy – Brigham Manor.  It was a Sunday evening and the attractions were scheduled to open at 7pm.  We were approached by a few creatures as we stood in line.  They stood quietly waiting for someone to turn and notice they were only inches away from our faces.  The makeup and masks were very well done and the acting was phenomenal.  The actors were in character the entire time, which made it much more enjoyable.  At one point I asked one of them, “how long did it take to finish your makeup,” to which IT replied, “no makeup!”

Our group of 7 fun-loving, sillies, had a great time.  The only real fear we felt was the element of surprise and uncertainty of what was lurking directly around the corner from us.  My husband led the group and the center consisted of 4 grown woman clung tightly to each other as we walked through as a tight-knit unit with the other couple in the group bringing up the rear hand in hand.

So as not to ruin it for others, I will only say that you should expect the unexpected.

As I wrote the last post, reviewing what we were up against I was a bit concerned about walking through the woods and “cemetery” in the dark.  I wasn’t worried about what might jump out at me, I was worried about tripping over stumps or rocks.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that the paths were clear of all debris and very smooth.

I recommend a visit before it closes for the year on November 2nd (2013).  If you can’t, it’s worth planning a trip next year.

Two of us stopped by the psychic’s tent.  I would say to approach this as strictly entertainment.  The woman who read me spoke very fast and it all seemed scripted based on body type, the way I carried myself and clues she asked for.  I recently had an amazing tarot reading and I am a believer but this just didn’t resonate with me as being real.

Out of the 4 attractions, I would have to rank the Bishop House and the Freak Show in 3D as my top two favorites.  I would highly recommend going with people who think they will be scared.  It makes the adventure so much more exciting for everyone.  (A HUGE thank you to my husband, Sister-In-Law and amazing friends who made the night unforgettably amazing!)

Here are more pictures from last night…

Spookyworld Nightmare New England – Litchfield, NH

25mustseehaunts“Top Haunts Magazine” voted Spookyworld Nightmare New England in Litchfield, NH the best haunted house in the world for 2013 and the official site states it’s the “largest most terrifying haunted destination in the Northeast.”  It has 5 haunted attractions and several eateries and bars included on site.

A large group of us are headed there tomorrow evening so I thought I would report here on what we can expect.  I will touch base after with some pictures, and tales of horrors if we survive.

I took a look at what Spookyworld has to offer at this location (there are 2, the other being in RI).  Perhaps if I’m more prepared, I will be less startled.  I doubt it.  As I’ve mentioned many times over in comments on this site, I am more afraid of the living than I am of the dead.

Visitors can expect to have free reign of the newly expanded Monster Midway, but know you aren’t alone.  The living dead accompanies you on your adventure and may sneak up on you at any moment.   This is where you will find many attractions.  There will be several sideshow attractions, music, Zombie paintball, Go-Kart racing, Mini-Golf, Batting Cages, concessions, tarot card readings and a fire-pit.

All that sounds like fantastic, but add into the mix 5 different attractions to choose from with the possibility of new ones having been added, and you are sure to have a “spooktacular” time.

You will find the following attractions included with your admission (to find prices, head to the official webpage listed in the source area.  For discount coupons, visit a Dunkin’ Donuts prior to arrival.)

The Bishop Legacy – Brigham Manor

Brigham Manor is the home of the legendary Bishop family.  As the fictional tale goes, the family who built this home on the banks of the Merrimack River only ventured out at night and kept mostly to themselves.  After many people went missing and two cars belonging to several missing teens were found abandoned adjacent to their land, this Halloween-loving family who were reportedly partial to dark rituals was arrested.  It is said that the Bishop family has returned to haunt the home and the living members are back, ready to capture any new and unsuspecting guests.

Raven’s Claw Resurrection

Beware as you venture deep into the woods in the cemetery.  Watch your step as you pass by freshly dug graves.  Be ready to encounter a zombie or corpse as you pass gravestones, crypts and mausoleums.

Riverside Hospital

Riverside was turned into a psychiatric hospital to accommodate the many tormented souls who visited the Bishop estate to check out the property.  It didn’t take long for the hospital to be overfilled and understaffed.  When the Bishop Family returned, they paid the hospital a visit.  They cut all power, trapping the patients inside.  Travel through these halls with the light of a single glow stick and be prepared to hear the echos (or are they echos?) of the screaming residents.

The Colony

Take a walk through the woods along the Merrimack if you dare.  You may encounter members of “The Colony” who walk the darkness, away from the rest of society.

Freak Show in 3 D

“Enter the mind-bending labyrinth of 3-D Freak Show where a mutant army of freaks, evil clowns, and starving zombies reign supreme.”  Find your way through several obstacles while trying to avoid the monsters in the dark.

According to the official website, other attractions were being added as well.

Check out the followup post to this one in which I review our visit to this location: Spookyworld – Our Visit and Review.

If you have been to this location, please feel free to share your experiences in the comment section.  Also head over to the sidebar for fascinating stories of some TRULY haunted locations.

Happy Halloween!!

1381465_10151702152093456_593439603_n - CopyTake my hand as we venture on a journey through a certified haunted mansion.  I will guide you through my experiences, explain how I felt and share with you some pictures of the inside of the home that will take you back in time to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

I had the opportunity to speak with Edwin who is a very kind and gentle man.  He and Lillian are very attached to the mansion but due to circumstances that were out of their control, they had to leave their home.

The caretakers, Tina and Marion are equally fantastic and personable people.  One conversation with any of them and you feel as if you’ve known them forever.  The house holds amazing charm and character.  I would recommend a visit if you ever get the chance.

1390781_10151702151988456_555292548_nYou will immediately fall in love with the beautiful charm of this house.  The wood around the doors is original to the home and is spectacular.  The fireplaces are original to the home and only burn coal.

Lillian has a magnificent eye for decorating and the main floor and bedrooms are beautifully decorated with art and furniture that would have you question if it belonged to S. K. Pierce himself.

The safe, pictured below belonged to Sylvester’s wife, Ellen.

3422_10151702151283456_122910843_n - CopyIf you look closely, you may even see some of Jay Stemmerman’s, a former occupant of the 60’s, art that was left behind.

Our first tour of the inside was on Friday, October 18th during the Blood moon/Lunar eclipse.  Spirit Sleepers Investigators was on site with an amazing team of Tarot and Palm Readers from Salem, MA.  I will go further into detail about my Tarot and palm readings here, in a different post starting tomorrow.

1374947_10151702151533456_134244336_nI will tell you though, that on this night, they had a table tipping ceremony that was unbelievable.  My husband and friends were very hungry by 8:40 when the first of two sessions started and were eager to eat.  We journeyed across the street to get some pizza and discuss the evening.  Guests and Reverends came over to use the restroom and were raving about what we had missed.  Someone showed us a short video of the table jumping like crazy and told us it could be heard from two floors down on the first floor.  Several of the residing spirits had communicated loud and clear.  There is a personal account from one of the people who was sitting in on the session that can be viewed by going to their Facebook page, “Haunted Victorian Mansion” and viewing October 19th’s posts.  Several people who had come over also testified that the table started jumping immediately and several spirits came through.

On this first trip I was joined by my husband, one of best friends, her adult son and younger daughter.  We all had separate experiences.  There was always quite a bit of chatter and activity from the living so I would have to say that if there was more activity than what I mention, it could have been easily overlooked.  The group I was with had several experiences in addition to mine.

I had a jacket on that left my arms exposed from the elbow down.  As were ascending the staircase from the first floor foyer to the second floor. I felt a buzz of static electricity pass me going in the opposite direction.  I could feel it on my face and arms especially and it sent a chill down my spine.

When we were in the room that was one used as a brothel, where several women had been lost their lives, I could feel a mild pressure on my chest.  It was explained that many women have felt ill in this room and some have had to leave the room in order to feel better.

I took a great number of pictures both days, hoping to capture an orb or something fascinating.  When I took a picture of a mirror while in the dark, as the flash went off I jumped as did the man standing behind me because we thought we saw something.  When I got home and looked at the pictures, I was shocked at what I thought I saw in the mirror.  I see a young woman bent over with her face close to the mirror.  Her arm looks bent up toward her chest as if she saying “come here.”  She was not part of the tour and the image looks translucent.  This photo was taken with an iPhone 4S in the dark, with flash.  The only editing that was done was cropping to bring the inside of the mirror closer, and the drawing you see where I outlined the girl.  What do you see?

1391466_10151702152288456_1397926055_n - Copy1383845_10151702200183456_769926872_n

1383463_10151702152398456_1627083162_nWe were even allowed to climb the spiral stairwell to the widow’s peak and get a look out of the window, four stories up.  I took great pleasure in snapping a few picture of the cars across the street that were waiting to turn.  I could only imagine the stories they told about a flashing light coming from the fourth story window of the scary haunted Victorian.

During both trips I felt very disoriented, but more so on the second.  I am very good with directions and don’t get turned around easily but the entire time inside the mansion I was unsure of where I was within the house.  I’ve been through twice and could not tell you the layout.  On the second trip, a different friend brought her friend with her.  The two of us were somewhat disoriented for about 45 minutes after we left.

The second tour was two days later (tonight, Sunday, October 20th) with all proceeds going toward the Relay for Life.  I was so pleased to see how successful it was.  We arrived at 4:30 and were standing in line waiting for a tour.  When we left, the line was out the door and to the end of the street.

I felt more during the second visit.  I felt dizzy in two different rooms, heaviness in my chest in another and toward the end of the tour, the center of my stomach was upset.  I felt something tickle my face on the first floor during Edwin’s introduction on the first floor.

There is a room in the basement, described as a hotbed of activity, where they have chairs set up for investigators so I decided to take a seat.  As I sat there, the right arm of the chair started to vibrate, the right side of my body became very cold and I felt something touch my face for a second time.

My phone was acting strangely during both tours.  I can’t even tell you what it was doing the first night.  It kept showing me a screen of mini pictures when I was trying to snap a shot.  I’ve looked at the phone since to try to figure out what I may have touched to make it do that and I cannot figure it out.  Tonight, the flash wasn’t working but was clearly on.  Some of the pictures came out blurry as if the lens was dirty and a couple others were very dark.  There are several pictures I took that are not even in the album when I tried to find them, one of them being in the basement room that I spoke of above and one of the staircase from the third floor looking down to the second floor landing.  I’m not sure how many others are missing.

1378883_10151702150293456_1247079732_n - CopyOne of the rooms had an old photo album that Lillian had purchased and did not belong to the Pierce Family.  As I was looking through it with my friend, Rebecca, I started to feel dizzy and nauseous.

1385896_10151700260518456_185130502_nLast night was amazing!  What better thing to do on a creepy October night with a full moon and an eclipse than to visit a haunted mansion?

My husband and I were accompanied by one of my best friends and two of her children while we visited a certified haunted location last night.  I have written a great deal about the S.K. Pierce Haunted Victorian Mansion on this blog site and I have been pulled toward the location many times.  Tonight was my first look inside.

I must say that the Spirit Sleepers Paranormal Investigators Psychic Faire was a life-changing event in so many ways, to say the least.  I don’t want to share too much in this post, instead just give you an overview of what you can expect to see here over the next week on this blog site.

I hope to return tomorrow night to the Victorian.  They are hosting a Flash Light Tour fundraising event for The Relay For Life and I’d like to support it.  That’s the only reason I am not posting yet about my experiences.  I am sure I will have more tomorrow if I go and I want to wait to post it all together.

Let me just give you a closer look into what I’ll be bringing you over the next few days:

  • A walk through of the experiences of the paranormal activity my group and I had during the tour of the Haunted Victorian.
  • A few pictures of the inside of the Victorian. The furniture and woodworking in the house are incredible.
  • YES!  I think I captured a spirit when taking a picture of a mirror in the dark.  I will share it for your opinion.
  • My life-altering, first ever Tarot reading by a sweet, lovely and talented Witch from Salem.  (This you won’t want to miss.  I caught the entire session on audio tape so I can review and report it accurately, which I have not listened to yet.  And yes, I’m an open book so I don’t mind sharing.)  Some of the subjects she touched on that I will share are, “My Purpose,” “The Several Reasons For My Paranormal Experiences Since I was 13,” “A Few Things About My Children,” “How this information affected me” and a few other topics.
  • Info about my palm reading that I recorded.
  • Results from my husband’s first ever Tarot reading, also caught on tape, including information on “Upcoming Winter Weather,” “Finances,” “His Special Gift,” “The Light of His Life,” “Work Issues,” “A Prediction” and many other things.
  • I will also share with you experiences that my best friend and her children had while they were there, if they don’t mind.  (Fascinating.)

None of us left the mansion without an experience.  I can’t wait to share it all!  Follow this blog if you’d like to hear more.

If you would like to visit the mansion tomorrow night on 4 West Broadway on Gardner and bring your flashlight between 4-8 for a $10 tour.  All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

Thank you for stopping by today!  Also check out my other blog, The Peace And Happiness Project ~ Missy Bell.

One of the Most Haunted Places in New England

History of the Hoosac Tunnel:

During the early 1800’s there was no direct route that connected  Boston’s railroad to upstate New York.  The completion of such a route was being sought in order to increase the transport of goods from businesses back and forth from these areas.

In 1825 a route was proposed by a man named who Laomi Baldwin surveyed the land for the proposed canal route but it was shot down.  It was determined they would have to bore a hole through the mountain and that would be far too costly a venture.

Alvah Crocker, a paper mill manufacturer from Fitchburg, MA opened his Fitchburg Railroad in 1845 which traveled from Boston to Greenfield.  In order to connect the railroad to New York, there would need to be a way through the Deerfield River Valley and somehow pierce through the Hoosac Mountain that stood in the way.

Tragedy in the Tunnel

Mr. Crocker obtained state funding in 1854 to start burrowing through the mountain near North Adams, MA, but many problems ensued.  There were many issues including political, monetary, structural, engineering, etc.  Thirteen years later, the tunnel, still under construction, met with tragedy.  There had been deaths prior to this but on October 17, 1867, an explosion killed the 13 people inside the shaft.  There are approximately 200 deaths in the Hoosac Tunnel, later nicknamed, “The Bloody Pit.”

The Haunted Hoosac

According to the book, “Haunted Massachusetts,” two of the deaths occurred due to an explosion during a premature detonation that was set off by a man named, Ringo Kelley.  Kelley was never convicted of a crime.  On the one year date of the anniversary of the explosion, Kelley was found strangled in the tunnel in the very spot the two men had been killed.

After this incident, many workers walked off the project because they stated they were hearing agonizing voices of people who were not there.  The project almost came to a halt due to the number of employees who would not return so investigators were hired to put their minds at ease.  It was an unsuccessful effort due to the investigators also hearing moans coming from the tunnel.

Phantom workers have been reported to be seen by many as well as mysterious lights, chilling voices, whispers and other unearthly happenings.

My son, Austin took a trip to the tunnel with his freshman class as part of a class called, “mountain classroom” at Ayer High School.  He states they walked a little ways into the tunnel before coming out.  He and his friends did not have an experience nor did they see anything unusual.

There is no trespassing in the tunnel so if you go, please be aware that it is still used as a functioning railway and police patrol the area.  (I do believe the class had been given permission to enter when they did so there may be a way to contact someone for permissions.  You may try the museum if you  have a group or class who would like to go.)

If you or anyone you know have been to this location, please feel free to share your experiences or stories that you have heard about the location.

Additional Information:

The first train passed through the 4.75 mile, $20 Million tunnel in February of 1875 with the official opening July 1, 1876.  A room was carved out in the center of the tunnel for walkers.  Passenger service was suspended in 1958.

The Heritage State Park Museum & Visitors Center is located in North Adams, Massachusetts and houses many artifacts from the construction, an audio/visual presentation of the construction process as well as other educational material about the area.

1380723_10151673118023456_1383467710_nAs promised, there will be several parts of this series on the S.K. Pierce Haunted Victorian Mansion in Gardner, MA.  I have been asked by the owner to do a piece on table tipping.  They will be having a psychic fair at the mansion on October 18th that includes several different types of investigative styles that you can choose to participate in.  I will be covering, hopefully tomorrow, what table tipping is, hopefully a video example, what is going on at the fair, i.e. the times, prices and how to get tickets.  The proceeds from tours and events go toward the repair and upkeep of the mansion.

I urge you to read part 1 after you finish this one if you find this interesting.  It is about my experiences and my knowledge of the house and how I first became aware of it, a video clip of a voice from the beyond answering a question very clearly, and detailed summary of the deaths and unexplained happenings as well as a description of the findings from the recent episode of Ghost Adventures.

I am also hoping to do a video interview with a dear friend of mine who is, as I write this, at the mansion on lock down for an investigative tour.  I know she has already had an experience as she has shared via text.  More on that soon.

In this, part 2, I would like to share with you a 6 minute video short tour of the Victorian with Owner, Edwin Gonzalez.  He will be leading Kat, Tony and Wendy from Maine Ghost Hunters on a tour of the house during which he will explain several happenings that have taken place at the mansion with the past owner as well as some things that other investigators have witnessed.  He also shares some of his own stories while you get to see what some of the inside of the house looks like.

What did you think of the reflection in the mirror they showed in the beginning that was caught on a Nikon camera without the flash setting?

This is the last video for the night.  It is also from Maine Ghost Hunters.  It is about 3 minutes and shows a short flashlight session with communication from the spirits.

If you have visited this house, what were your experiences.  Please let us know in the comment thread.

There are a great number of videos on the internet with EVP and video evidence that are much longer.  I will keep this a short post.  More tomorrow on “Table Tipping.”

Don’t forget to check out Part 1 of this series as well as coverage of the Fitchburg Rev Cemetery. Simply go to the side bar on the left.  Be sure to sign up to follow this blog for more info on areas in the United States that are reported to be haunted.

You can also check out my other blog site, http://www.PeaceAndHappiness.com where I focus on helping others reduce stress and increase happiness.

Thank you for stopping by,

Missy Bell
